My next batch of candle holders are coming soon. I accidentally got some cobalt onto some of them and they came out all with some blue spots all over them (🤦🏻‍♀️🙄) sooo I will go with the flow and glaze them black. Some will still be white, but if you’ve been waiting for a white one there will only be a few! Still, I’m looking forward to the dark ones. The clay I used this batch is coarser, which will work well to get the dark, matte, textured surfaces I’m looking for. —
If you want to know when my next shop update is please sign up for my newsletter, link in bio. I’ve been working to get my emails and website more useful for you, so the next ones I send out will have a different look and content. Truthfully, I’ve been spending less time on this app. It is frustrating that Instagram only shows our (business accounts) posts to fewer than 10% of our followers. They can do what they want, it’s their app. But if this place is changing, I want to adapt. I hope you’ll join me in my newsletter group so that I can communicate with you in a more personal way. —
Of course I will still be here posting updates on my stories and grid. But really I’ve been enjoying the stories more and more, and chatting in DMs can brings more in depth conversations.
Always feel equal parts happiness and sadness when I see a batch of pieces after they are bisque fired because I know they will not retain that beautiful peachy color after the second fire. I used to dread glazing, but I have learned to love this final step because it can add so much depth to the thin surface of a piece. I’m still on the fence about how to glaze this batch of mugs. I’ll definitely be doing some white matte and some unglazed. The white matte is especially lovely because the brown clay below still expresses itself on the edges and through the transparency of the glaze I make. Excited to see this batch done, it’s been a while since I made new mugs. I hope to glaze them tomorrow!
On my mind lately: it’s the little things that make the biggest difference.
Candle holders, drying slowly, getting ready for their first fire. My idea for these as with all of my work is to elevate a seemingly mundane object into an unexpected detail in your home. Candles are great because they can be affordable and are such a simple pleasure especially during cold spells like what we just had. Although I just walked outside, and it’s 60F right now in NY, but I think I’ll still light a candle tonight. :)

This grey clay will actually transform into a sandy white texture that will contrast nicely with a smooth wax candle. Hoping to have these fired this week.
Last week was filled with moments where I felt sick to my stomach. Where I realized something and then just feel like I want to be swallowed up into a black hole, or just hike up a mountain and never come back. I wanted to post about them but I was kind of still embarrassed, but now things are settled I am getting over it. First I realized a couple of my packages were being sent to the billing address instead of the shipping address, which were not the same!! Learn from me. Always check if it’s the SHIPPING address before you send. I am lucky to have super sweet customers who totally understand but in that one moment I felt like, how could I make such an obvious mistake. Then later that week, as I was getting comfortable on the train one morning, I suddenly felt that sickening feeling again. I had forgotten a batch of ceramic pieces at home that I was supposed to deliver that day for a time sensitive project. Again I was lucky because my collaborator was so understanding and somehow still managed to put together a project we’re really proud of (will share more soon). I knew I’d make mistakes when opening my shop, when opening up my work with others, but when it actually happens, it is really hard when my only option is to own it and just say, well I’ll never do that again. I don’t mind when I make mistakes that only affect me, but I think the people pleaser in me takes it really hard. But I’m still here and the shop is still open, and at least now you know if I send you a package I’ll send it to the correct address! —
In other news it’s finally winter here in the northeast and I’m lighting candles to stay cozy. Here are two candle holders seconds that I kept for myself. I’m making more of them and hope to get them online in a couple weeks time. There is a slight difference between these two in the photo, if anyone can spot it? ❄️🕯✨
If you can tell I’ve been a tiny bit obsessed over candle holders lately. Luckily I’m not the only one. @allisonsamuels and I have a special collaboration going on, involving these guys ☝️! Some sneak peeks in stories! We have two colorways and I can’t decide which I like more. —
Also I was able to get some more double candle holders made this weekend and have some stories to post later today. I go step by step to show you how it’s done. It’s a new kind of story I will be posting more regularly since many of you ask specific questions about my studio tips. I have learned so much from running my tiny studio by myself and would love to share with those of you thinking of taking the plunge yourself. Tune in later!
It’s been quite empowering to see stats for my new webshop, seeing what gets clicked on, what people are curious about. I was wondering what was driving traffic to my site, specifically the candle holders page. I got a tip from a customer that they were featured on @readtealeaves blog. I was confused for a sec, thinking I didn’t get a tag on that. Then I realized, oh yeah the internet is not all Instagram. Thank you Erin for sharing my work in the blogosphere! —
If you haven’t seen my new shop yet, go to my link in bio. I would love to know what you think. Can you find what you’re looking for? Is it easy to navigate? Is the text legible? I’d love to hear from you. —
I had some requests asking for when the candle holders will be back in stock. I’ll be making some this weekend if anyone wants to tune in for a story. Will take a few weeks to get the next batch up online, but I’ll always keep you updated.
Packages are going out today and tomorrow! I’m hoping that everyone who placed an order over the weekend gets their pieces by the end of this week. Packaging took way longer than I expected and I was definitely missing some key tools that would have made the job easier. It can only get easier from here, right? Thank you all for supporting my first shop opening. And thanks to my mom and dad who drove in last night from Montreal (and rescued me from Trenton NJ where I was stranded due to crazy weather-related train fiascos 💀), and let me put them to work on mailing out all the boxes. Also for cooking us one of my favorite Taiwanese dinners from childhood. —
Really pleased that everyone wanted more of these stone grey mugs. I only made a few because I have to hand mix the clay with a mineral to get this finish. I want to make more of these, in a slightly bigger and wider mug shape. I’ve been using some of my old mugs lately and kind of love how heavy they feel. I think it’s important to keep your old pieces, I still learn a lot from using them today.
